Muktinath, a sacred place both for Hindus as well as the Buddhists, is located at an altitude of 3,710 meters, at the foot of the Thorong La mountain pass (part of the Himalayas), Mustang district, Kingdom of Nepal.
The Hindus call the place as Mukti Kshetra, which literally means the "place of salvation", while the Buddhists call it Chumig Gyatsa, which in Tibetan means
'Hundred Waters'.
In the southern corner of the Muktinath complex an old temple, the Mebar Lhakang Gompa is specially famous for its hot springs and natural gas jets. The combination of earth, water and fire seems to be the origin of the religious significance of Muktinath. Here you can find the eternal burning flames of natural gas: Sale Mebar (burning soil); Do Mebar (burning stone) and Kla Mebar (burning water). The flames are hidden behind a curtain and you wouldn't notice them, if a guide wouldn't show them to you.
